William Sherman Eckhardt
William Sherman Eckhardt, a life-long resident of Ritzville, Washington, died peacefully in his sleep at Pine Ridge Alzheimer's Special Care Center in Spokane Valley, WA on March 15, 2017, at the age of 91. He was born on May 11, 1925 to Jacob and Anna Eckhardt on the family farm two miles north of Packard. Four children were born to the elder Eckhardts – Marguerite, Bill, John and Mary. Later, the family moved to Ritzville, when his father built Eckhardt Machine Shop in 1939. Bill attended Ritzville High School and graduated in 1943.
After serving with the U.S. Army in WWII from 1944-1946, Bill returned home to work with his father, who was his best teacher. Bill later took over Eckhardt Machine Shop until he retired and sold the business in 2001.
Bill was an active member of the Zion Philadelphia Church and its choir. He was Past Master and 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, as well as a member of the El Katif Shriners. Bill's civic involvement also included membership in the Ritzville Lions Club, Jaycees, H. E. Gritman Senior Center and the C. J. Newland Post No. 51.
Through the years, Bill dedicated his time to Eckhardt Machine Shop and area residents who were patrons. He was a loyal supporter of all events in the Ritzville community. He always enjoyed fishing and riding his motorcycle. In addition, he was a wonderful gardener who took great pride in his yard.
In 1973, Bill married Dorothy Meyer (Benzel). He is survived by three stepdaughters, Gail Carda, Peggy Page and MaryKay McGrail; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren; his sister, Mary Millard and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 25th at Zion Philadelphia United Church of Christ, 301 E. Broadway, Ritzville, WA. Graveside service will be held at Ritzville Memorial Cemetery at 1:00 PM. Memorial donations may be directed to Pine Ridge Alzheimer's Special Care Center, 12009 E.
